The rebuild of this 1926 character home was a unique challenge for our custom home build team. Kitsilano Construction and Design worked carefully with the homeowners to take this once proud example of the Vancouver Craftsman style and pull it into the 21st century, holding onto the essential design elements of the era and original architectural base.

After deconstructing the majority of the home and raising it, our design and build teams set to work with the owners consulting on ways to rebuild this historical treasure in a homage befitting its original building style. New floor plans and exterior elements were quickly drawn up as our construction teams set to work on giving this stunning Vancouver character home a new lease on life.

LOFTY GOALS

Our expert building technicians planned and promptly executed an ambitious plan of adding a new level to the home, lowering the foundation and placing new footings. Additions to the front of the home and a higher ceiling were added with a second level and dormers added. Our building technicians and project managers were more than up to the complex task of this immense home improvement project, delivering quickly to allow our builders to start constructing the vision of interior design team.

COMPELLING CONTRAST

Choosing to work with a neutral color scheme paired with dramatic contrasting elements such as flamed granite stairs and an inviting blue door, our exterior design is intended to convey feelings of warmth. The dental detail, gabled roof with rafter tails, symmetrical dormers and interlocking footpath provide a friendly façade to the neighborhood, matching well with the character of the surrounding homes and staying true to the building’s era.

Interior design concepts were based around an open living, dining and kitchen area, greeting visitors from the entryway. Large format tiles on the fireplace separated the living and dining areas, drawing the eye to the ceiling while a feature wall painted in charcoal adds contrast to the neutral finishes and hardwood flooring.

Installation of pendant lighting over the dining table and kitchen island add a sense of lightness and transparency to the kitchen, pairing with the custom cabinetry. Contrasting cabinetry colours in white and rich brown separate the kitchen island and work areas. The theme of contrast remains constant with a glass backslash to offset the light stone countertops. Under-mount stainless steel double sinks and a gas range were provided to give a home to the avid home chef.

MADE FOR MODERN LIFE

The usage of wide moldings, trim and baseboard was intended to remain within the context of the original interior design concepts to the Vancouver Craftsman style.  Lighting was recessed and dimmable with wall mounted bathroom light fixtures as an additional custom design touch. The luxurious rain shower and vanity sink feature a single lever faucet for convenience, while the large format tile tub surround and backsplash retained with our design philosophy of contrast on this custom home renovation project.

The second floor master bedroom provides a wonderful sleeping porch, a peaceful location to enjoy one’s coffee on a warm summer morning, flanked by a pair of flower beds intended to give a relaxed space to unwind before starting their hectic day.

Expertly designed backyard landscaping was thoughtfully laid out adjacent to a covered outdoor lounge area to entertain year-round. The large deck provides ample space for barbeques and parties with plenty of space for outdoor furniture.

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Our extensive reconstruction successfully updated the classical elements of the 1926 build, with a look and feel matching the history and style of the neighborhood. Deliberate placement of new windows, and the careful preservation of the original stained glass flooded this once dark home with new light and life.

New floor plans opened up the living spaces of the home to provide a friendly, inviting space for living and entertaining to fit the needs of today’s discerning homeowner. An eye towards authenticity in detail and elements was a priority in our interior design philosophy. Custom millwork throughout the home with dramatic touches of oil rubbed bronze hardware and hardwood floors paired with the wide baseboards and molding to create a rich, dramatic look with a focus on quality. The modern conveniences of a built-in sound system and dimmer switches paired with traditional character home elements to add quality and ease of usability.
